Position Description Laborer
Non- Exempt position
Salary Range $11.00-$24.10
General Statement of Job: This is heavy manual labor involving semi-skilled work in various maintenance and construction tasks requiring the use of tools, equipment and the operation of light equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Crew Leader at the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor.
Essential Job Functions: Installation and repair of water mains, service lines, fire hydrants and other water system infrastructure .
Maintain and operate vehicles and equipment as assigned. Maintain tool and material inventory on assigned vehicle.
Must be willing and able to be on the on-call roster.
Assist co-workers with maintenance and clean up at warehouse, office and job sites.
The ability to learn tasks and perform them without constant supervision
Initiative, i.e. the willingness to do more than expected and the ability to find work when no supervision is available.
Perform other related duties as directed.
Minimum Training and Experience:
Must have a Florida approved high school diploma or equivalent; Possess a valid Florida Drivers License. One year experience as a laborer preferred. Obtain a Level 3 Distribution Operators License within one year.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:
Some knowledge of tools and equipment used in general maintenance work. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to laboring work. Ability to learn the operation of light trucks, small tractors and light equipment. Ability to understand and follow simple instruction. Physical strength and ability is required to perform manual labor outdoors under extreme weather conditions.
Physical requirements: Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects that weigh up to 70 pounds. This position requires frequent bending and stooping in the installation of water meters and radio read equipment. Must be able to remain on knees for extended periods of time while working on water lines and meters. Requires kneeling and standing which may be in excess of thirty times a day.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak effectively with co- workers and the public. Requires the ability to tactfully and effectively interact with the public and co-workers. Requires the ability to provide understandable methods of communication, including spoken and written word.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read and retain information from a variety of policy and procedure manuals, etc. Requires the ability to document activities using prescribed formats while adhering to rules of grammar, spelling, diction and punctuation. Requires the ability to communicate effectively in English.
Ability to Process Data: Requires the ability to apply principles of logic to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to follow verbal and written instructions
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform basic math functions.
Form/Spatial aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, identify degrees of similarity in form.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes using modern equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
